Yesterday, I received a small blue postcard in the mail proclaiming me an “official prizewinner” entitled to receive one of four “guaranteed” prizes: one of the cars mentioned in this post’s title or $40K in cash, a $1,500 shopping spree, an “exotic island adventure”, or $500 cash. In addition, I would get either a 4-day Royal Carribbean Cruise or a pre-paid round trip to Las Vegas or Orlando. The card went on to inform me that the company bestowing this unexpected largess–the Awards Verification Center–had tried to “contact” me with no success to inform me about my winnings, so now it was up to me to contact them at their toll-free number–within 72 hours, of course–to “visit” them and claim my prizes.

Frankly, it was a little strange of the Awards Verification Center to notify me that I had won thousands of dollars in prizes with a cheap postcard with perforated edges that might make a cynical person suspect that they had sent out hundreds or thousands of similar postcards to other potential suckers. The Clearing House Sweepstakes people have the decency to send Ed McMahon in person, bearing a really big check. Awards Verification Center, why be so schlocky?

For kicks, I decided to call the toll-free number to get a taste of the scam in action. Unsurprisingly, the company sells timeshares in vacation properties. The award notices are their lame way of getting people to visit their properties so they can trap you in a room and relentlessly urge you to buy in. When I called, the operator badgered me for my phone number claiming that she needed it to “access the record” of my winnings (never mind that she also asked for the “record locator number” on the postcard I received. I hope that the fake number I provided doesn’t have a real life person on the end.) The operator then informed me that in order to receive my prizes, I had to visit a property in Massachusetts–about a 2 hour drive from NYC–and then participate in a 90-minute site tour. Yeah, right.

It’s hard for me to imagine that people actually fall for this crap, but clearly they do since the Awards Verification Center is actually a public company called Silverleaf Resorts which generated ~$200 million in revenue last year. Still, I suspect that the Internet has put a cramp in the Awards Verification Center’s style and may eventually force them to change their ways. After finishing my phone call with their operator, a quick Google search produced the following tidbits:

  • The company goes by several names other than Awards Verification Center and Silverleaf Resorts. Look out for Hill Country Resorts, Holly Lake Ranch, Lake O’ the Woods, and Piney Shores Resorts.
  • The Better Business Bureau has a detailed report on the company. In the past 36 months, the Bureau processed 145 customer complaints regarding Silverleaf’s advertising, contracts, billing, sales practices, and service, among other things. Most of these issues are still unresolved.
  • The Bureau’s report also states that “if you have received an award letter from this company, it does not mean that you have won a contest. You will receive a free gift if you attend the sales presentation, but the chances that you will receive a major prize such as a car or cash are very slim. Most consumers receive the ten one-day holiday package, which allows use of resort facilities during the daytime only. Overnight accommodations and transportation are not included. The company can not say which award you will receive until you attend the sales presentation.”

My Google search also turned up a few postings by other bloggers detailing their experiences with the Awards Verification Center–a couple of which are pretty amusing. The posts detail the company’s over-the-top hardsell tactics and warn that the “guaranteed” free trip referred to in the postcard they sent out actually requires an advance cash payment.

10 years ago, it would have been difficult for a recipient of a postcard like the one I received to easily confirm a lurking suspicion that it was all too good to be true. That in mind, I wonder how many people have actually subjected themselves to a site visit and prepaid for “free” trips?

It will be interesting to see how companies like the Awards Verification Center deal with the viral alerting system that the Internet provides–my guess is that potential customers will become increasingly savvy and decline “prizes” like those described above. Still, as Nigerian email scams prove, technology hasn’t yet altered PT Barnum’s timeless observation about basic human gullibility and the allure of freebies. Perhaps Google should add a “sucker alert” feature?

It’s incredible to think about how stupid some people are. My friend Auren Hoffman though says that most of the poeple who fall for scams are smart people because they can rationalize their behavior.

I too got a post card and called them asking why both ends were preferated, and they tried to tell me that 4 people won this prize and then offered me 3 different days with 3 different times each day that I could go.. 3×3 is 9.. so why so many options? on they phone they told me to bring my license and my credit card because they had people with “fake id’s”. I couldnt stop laughing at them then they asked if I was forefiting my prizes. I said well, If Ive won them you have my address so go ahead and mail them and skip the 3 hr drive to the resort which on the website looked like a crap hole in the mountains with a golf course that I wouldnt even do donuts on.

Yes these people harass you they sent me a ton of blue postcards then they sent me a package, then they called my house. I thought to myself leave me alone!!! My theory is “Nothing is free in this world” So why the hell would someone just give me a BMW or Mercedes specially when its not even a prize you signed up for or even played for. I hope people read these things and avoid calling or even talking to these people, unless they are in a for a ride of a lifetime debt!

this people have been trying to get me for more then 2 yrs now. first it was the blue post cards followed by the phone calls, they just dont know when to give up. I’ve always been skeptical about things like this; there is no such thing as a free lunch. if anyone knows how to get rid of this annoying solicitations please post the info.

I have received this same blue card from the same company asking me to call for the BMW etc. My question is, if the law enforcement are there to protect the innocent and prosecute criminals, why can’t they just go and arrest these thieves. I did not know that criminals, pick-pockets etc could go in public annoucing what they want to do without being arrested. But I have seen exactly that happening right here in the United States with no consiquences. Please go arrest these tugs for they are doing crime in the open.

Unfortunately we were taken. If you are thinking about buying at Silverleaf - DO NOT DO IT. We were lied to and now it is too late.

helllo,

thank you - you saved me a stupid phone call

another small puzzle - they must havecaller ID?

so why do they need to ask for your number?

I just recieved that in the mail today and I also googled Awards Verification Center and this post came up. What a bunch of BS

Thank you so much for posting this up! I was skeptical when I received the little blue postcard, espeically when they listed the choice of prizes. If you are the prize winner, you just have one grandprize and not a variety of choices to choose from….and Google is awesome…a quick search and your site pops up =D

I had a similar experience just tonight. For the past couple of weeks, I have been receiving phone calls on my personal cell phone and my phone at work from an 801 number I don’t recognize, so I had yet to answer until tonight. They person on the phone (not automated) goes on to tell me that I have been selected as a winner for a 2-day paid trip to either Las Vegas or Orlando (I could have won $50,000 or a new car instead, according to her). I am a skeptical person when it comes to things like this where you win thousands of dollars or free cruise trips and such, so the first thing I said was that I don’t remember signing up for this “sweepstakes” or whatever it was that I had won. The operator explained to me that I may have been signed up for it automatically upon signing up for some random website that perhaps hosted their drawing or something. This scenario, although possible, is entirely unlikely in my situation, as I never give my cell phone number out when registering for a website, let alone my work number. But this person went on to schedule a time and date that I could come pick up my prize in a location convenient for me (which was about 10-30 minutes south of my home, in a suburb of the city I live in). And at the time, I didn’t think about it, but she also said that all I would have to do is sit through and 90 minute presentation and I could have my prize. After reading the posts on here, I realized that I was experiencing this exact scenario that has been described on here. So anyway, I’d like to leave the number I’ve been receiving these calls from, so that if someone else is trying to validate this “prize” they’ve received, they may have the same company calling them, and they’ll know right away not to do anything. Or perhaps, with the number, something can be done about this. The phone number was 801-521-0512.

I don’t think people are stupid but sometimes desperate or financially in a hard position is why they get caught up by these scams. I for one know a friend that just got scammed out of 7 grand, tonight I just received a call from the 801-521-0512 number and just ignored it. Years ago my grandmother got caught up in a scam over makeup and was taken for 1500 bucks luckily I contacted the company and the better business bureau and she was able to get most of it back.

I think we as humans hope that there is actually still a bit of good in people and a wish for luck at times in this day of drugs, terrist and all the aweful things we have to deal with. Thank you for posting your experiences.

I google all numbers I don’t recognize and I, too, found this blog. I got the call on my cell from the 801-521… etc. Thank you for warning me before I stepped into this trap!! These are pretty sneaky places.

Yup - I’ve been getting these calls (801-521-0512) on my personal cell phone for a week or so now - finally picked it up yesterday and it was this same scam - of course I hung up on the guy…. well, they just called me again today! I’m not picking up any more, but I’d sure like to know where they got my personal cell number too - I definitely only give this out to my friends and family!

Yeah…. I almost fell for that crap. I called the number and was headed for Tyler Texas ( which is over 2 hours away from where I live). They even offered to give me a 20 dollar gas card. I was told that I would not leave with less then 1750.00 in prizes. I’m glad I decided to do my own research.

Thanks for the information.

I RECEIVE A ENVELOPE WITH A NOTIFICATION THAT SAID. CONGRATULATION YOU WIN A NEW MERCEDEZ OR BMW FOR $49,000 DOLLARS. PLEASE CALL THIS TELEPHONE. 1-866-217-8201. THEY SEND ME A CHECK FOR $1,750.00 DOLLARS LOOK LIKE A REAL CHECK BUT WENT I TURN THE CHECK IN THE BACK SAID NON- NEGOTIABLE. I CALL THE NUMBER THEY SEND ME . THE FIRST THING THEY DO WAS ASKING FOR MY CODE NUMBER THEN THEY ASK ME WENT I CAN SEE THEM . THEY CALL ME LATER AND ASK ME FOR A VISA CARD OR CHEKING ACCOUNT . I TOLL THEN I DO NOT KNOW YOU PROBABLE YOU GOING TO STILL MY ACCOUNT . WENT I SAID THAT THEY HAND UP THE PHONE. THIS IS A RIPE OFF THAT GOING ON WITH THIS COMPANY THAT TAKE HONEST PEOPLE AS STUPID PERSON. THANK YOU.

I am in Kansas and just received the 801-521-0512 call. I ignored it and decided to google it. How fascinating. I’m debating whether or not to call it back and mess with ‘em for kicks. It’s also interesting to see how recent everyone has been receiving these calls…

This is getting to my last nerve , I am tired of these calls that have been pestering me and many for some 3 months now, I also would like to know where in the hell they got a hold of some of our personal cell numbers? why in the heck do we have cell phones to begin with? So our friend and family can get a hold of us, not some theives making it look like we won some contest that non of us remember ever entering. I don’t have a house number in part to avoid those dang telemarketing asses, so how do we get them, is there a legal way to get the hell kicked out of them? and have us make money from them instead of them from us? please ,some one tell me PLEASE!!!

I called them up to see what they would say.

I told them I could not make such a long trip.

Now I get a phonecall from them every two weeks asking me to come up.

What a huge scam!

i just recieved this call 20 minutes ago on my cell phone , i jumped on too google and entered the number and pulled up this site i wonder how these people got are phone numbers ? i wonder if it was that publishers clearing house thing i entered on line.

HOW CAN YOU GET THESE PEOPLE TO STOP CALLING YOU ALSO GETTING CALLS FROM ANOTHER 801# SO BEWARE OF BOTH #’S 801-521-0512 AND 801-434-3085, LUCKLIY THEY HAVE A WEBSITE ON THE SECOND # AND I FOR ONE E-MAILED THEM TO DISCONTINUE THE CALLS. TYOU GET AN AUTOMATED VOICE ASKING “IS CARLY THERE?” AND IT KEEPS REPEATING ITSELF.

I just received a call from 801-521-0512. I also googled it and came up with this one and only website. This number only calls during daytime business hours. I am in Kansas. I will now add this to the ignore list of the phone.

I got called by 801-521-0512 yesterday (2/14) and was hoping it was a hot girl, but I googled and now see sadly it most likely is not. Dang!

yea, i also live in ks, and was called like 4-5 times, i thought it was this that was somewhat annoying who moved away to OK so i never answered. i googled 801 to see what city it was from- salt lake city- i dont know anywhere from there. today i decided to type in the whole number and found this- how random and thanks. i guess us kansans think alike cause i want to mess around with them too. hmmm
thanks guys
and sorry j factory- thats funny though

Hello

I to have received the blue cards. I have taken steps of my own to get even. I have found all the free magazine and info sites and entered the return adress found on the little blue card. I hope others will follow in my steps.

I just received a call this afternoon from 801 521-9512. The lady on the phone said my name and then proceeded to tell me that I had won a car or $50,000.00. I asked her where she was calling from and I think she said the Company was Trend (something). I then said to her that I had not entered any contest, so how could I have won something. There was a hesistation in her voice and she began to stammer. She said my name again, and I responded by letting her know that I am that person; however, I had not entered my name into any contest. As much as I would like $50,000.00 or a car, something in my mind just said, this is some sort of scam. There was a very uncomfortable pause on her end when I finally hung up the phone. I have callere i.d. on my phone and decided to look the number up on the internet. At first it only told me that the number is somewhere in Salt Lake City, Utah, but no Company name, etc. I searched the number further and this website came up. I was shocked and a bit appalled that someone has my name and number. The phone number is not in my name; hence, it is not out of the phone book which makes it a bit disconcerting as it makes you wonder where are they getting this apparently accurate information from. I hope something can be done to deter such acts in future.

I believe the company is TrendWest, a timeshare company in Ogden, Ut. I got onto their call list by entering to win a new mustang. Dang car had to be so beautiful! Anyhow, they called me before and almost had me talked into attending a presentation for which I would receive a whole lot of free stuff. When they found out I am single and a student, whose income is not sufficient, they cancelled my seat at the presentation. I thought I was done with them until two weeks ago when I began receiving calls from 801-521-0512. I have yet to answer because I generally only answer calls from callers in my phonebook. Now that I found this website, which reminded me who they are, I will not be answering their calls.

Thank You, Thank You I have received 2 blue cards was skeptical and did a google search and found this sight. thanks for saving me.

those people are idiots by wasting my damn time, now i know this is a fake.

I Found a new strain of this type of problem everyone’s experiencing via email that is using a local number to my area in Chicago, IL. The number is 815-773-2956. The email is from Prize Verification Center and it’s replyto email is reply@pvc.goldlasso.com yet the name displays as Prize Verification Center.

I can’t believe that the email I recieved is legit and so won’t be fooled by it but I haven’t found any searchable info that ties the info in the email to the company names you listed above. I assume this is the same scam. If not, darn…just missed out on a Cadillac Escalade-Infinity and/or vacation getaway…

Email looks like the following:

The major flaw indicators I see are the replyto email being hosted on goldlasso.com which is a shady marketing company and the email listed by “Kelly Janssen” which is yesuwon@aol.com (A free email account).

What a bunch of bull I’m sure.

Thanks for your time and avoid predetory marketing.

Hey!! after receiving one of these postcards , I decided t search the web and came across your site!! I am not sure that these are all scams, yes they try to get you to buy into timeshare, but back in 1999 I was getting married in Sept. I received a simular letter and called, same type of deal go down cape cod and do a 90 minute tour and was told over the phone their was no obligation to buy that I would receive my gifts no matter what my decision. so off to the cape we go, after the 90 minute tour we sit and listen, then say No thanks…. theygave us a $50 giftt certificate to a fairly good restaurant down the street and 2 round trip airfare to anywhere in the US… Including Hawaii > where we were planning on going for our honeymoon. so, it worked out for us , the only stipulation on the airline tix were we had to stay at certain resorts and pay!! which wasn’t a problem, since we were paying anyway….I cancelled my reservations previously made and used the tickets stayed 10 days at the Turtle Bay Hilton on Ohau, then 7 days on Maui at the Marriott. 10 days on Ohua cost me $125 per night and the Marriott cost me $50 per night >>> not a bad deal!!! so sometimes it is worth it to call these people and work something out! I will be calling this company to see what exactly they expect>> key question is what do I get for taking this 90 minute tour and what if I do not buy timeshare ???

Good Luck
Pat E.

They’re still at it! Received two phone calls which I didn’t answer and now an e-mail URGING me to contact them to receive my Cadillac Escalade. Curosity ALMOST got the best of me. Thanks for providing the very important information on the SCAM.

I want to thank you for posting this information. I didn’t receive a postcard in the mail, but rather an e-mail with an Olllld phone number of mine.

Stating that I had won the “Cadillac Escalade -
Infinity Vacation Getaway contest”, and knowing that I hadn’t entered really piqued my curiosity. Of course being an intelligent skeptical individual and always checking hoaxes and such. I was appeased to find your information about this scam. Again Thank you for taking time out of your schedule and saving me precious time.

I received an email like this and I did attend a travel planning presentation last week and I did receive a trip. It’s not a scam but just a common marketing technique for those in the travel industry.
I attended Star Vacation Club in San Diego and it was a nice presentation. I can’t afford the vacation club membership right now but it looks like a good deal. Too many people are skeptical these days!!

Kathy

i have been getting calls from the 801 number for only 4 days, and its annoying, all the times i have been busy and not been able to pick up the phone thanks goodneed

Thank you so… much for this info you guys!!!!! I got that email too and it was in reference to the Expedia survey and it almost got me cause I always use that website to purchase airline tickets. I just so happened to purchase some tickets around the time that they said I did the survey, so… I almost fell for it. Anyway, checked it out and now I don’t have to worry about it. LOL

There are two more numbers to be aware of. The are:708-441-8074, and 708-441-8070. These are both “prize claim” centers.

I received the same phone call with the call back number 815-773-2956 (kelly jansen). I was sure it was a scam and i’m glad that I searched this number and name on the internet. People beware.

YEP, we too got the same e-mail with the same web, name as some of the notices above from 2006, and they are still going strong. why isn’t something done to these SCAM artists?? Thanks for messages like this, so put somekind of a stop to these artists, if not at least it make (hopefully) the honest mankind aware of what kind of a trap they could be getting into. Thanks!!

This is who I was to contact and their number. Same as 2006

i knew this was a time share thing, but i still went. and went just for the prizes. i new it was a time share, but since i already own marriott time share, i just wanted to gifts. i drove 1.5 hr to conroe, tx. i sat for 90 mins and listened to the guy, but said i didnt want to pay and wasnt interested.

they gave me a 4 day cruise out of galveston, a 5 night stay (only M-F stay) in Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Aruba, etc., and $40 gas certificates which have to be mailed $10 ea month, so i know i’ll forget to do it.

the only thing is that you cant use the cruise on holidays and specific months, but that’s ok. All you have to pay is the port fee, which is about $100. For the hotel nights of course you have to provide airfare, but they are pretty good hotels, such as the westin in jamaica.

so i think its a scam, but i still went and got my gifts for about 3 hrs lost of my life, but i will enjoy the trips next year. that should make it up.

if you have the time and its not too far, i recommend you go and get your prizes, obviously no one wins the cars or the cash, but a few trip is not a bad thing. and just ask them to remove your name off the list and they will stop calling.

yeah, they called me a few days later, asked me to refer some friends and i would get $50 for each friend that came. i said i wasnt interested and to please remove my name from the database and they did. havent been bothered again.

Cherrypie -

First of all, it’s called spell check.

Second, have you tried to actually redeem those trips? From what I’ve read, it’s next to impossible to actually book anything, and even then they are the most expensive “free” trips on earth, what with all of the fees and “taxes” that you are responsible for. Be happy with your $40 in gas cards (if even those are legit). We just got back from one of these “tours” today & were disgusted by the sales tactics, outright lies, and deceptive practices of Silverleaf Resorts. Wish we would have done some research first…instead of reading everyone else’s horror stories after the fact.

The final insult - When we complained to the gifting rep about the salespeople, she tried to placate us with more “gifts” - a cheap portable DVD player and an additional $40 visa gift card. I stopped for some chinese takeout later that night, and wouldn’t you know it? $40 gift card declined. Invalid. B.S. Gotta love it.

My wife wants to mail them back the box for their DVD player, filled with dog poop. If you ask me, it would be a waste of perfectly good dog poop.

First and foremost the ignorance of the american consumer never ceases to amaze me. This IS Kelly Janssen and I am an independent 3rd party verifier of contest entries nationwide for several different companies in the vacation ownership industry. You see we are only legally allowed to email to people who have AUTHORIZED us in one way or another - either double opted in or straight entries into various promotions. When you visit websites and allow that company to share your information with 3rd party affiliates you can be entered into ANYTHING … as you have given them your PERMISSION. The vacation ownership industry is for people who wish to know more about travel clubs, timeshares etc and you invite us to email you or call!! Have a great day and I hope this has educated you to an extent regarding our industry.

Alexander never did what he said, Cesare never said what he did

We went for the sales pitch and got the free trips. They make it very difficult to use them, but we did book one. The Vegas hotel choices had the worst possible ratings on hotels.com. We booked anyway and then got a call a week before the trip. They sent me a check for $180 to NOT go on the trip. We took the money and ran.

BEWARE silverleaf’s sales tactics are SHAMELESS.

That said, there is a distinction between AdSense for Publishers (examples of which you’ve pointed to above) and AdSense for Search. The overwhelming majority of Google’s AdSense revenue is generated from search partners, including AOL and Ask.com. They still don’t make very much much money on the content side. (Or, How to Lose Customers and Irritate People)   Date: Friday, 28 Jul 2006 17:33 Yesterday, I received a small blue postcard in the mail proclaiming me an “official prizewinner” entitled to receive one of four “guaranteed” prizes: one of the cars mentioned in this post’s title or $40K in cash, a $1,500 shopping spree, an “exotic island adventure”, or $500 cash. In addition, I would get either a 4-day Royal Carribbean Cruise or a pre-paid round trip to Las Vegas or Orlando. The card went on to inform me that the company bestowing this unexpected largess–the Awards Verification Center–had tried to “contact” me with no success to inform me about my winnings, so now it was up to me to contact them at their toll-free number–within 72 hours, of course–to “visit” them and claim my prizes. i received a call yesterday while at work the message was left on my voice mail as “You have won a FLAT SCREEN TV” , please call 954-957-7247″. So I did I played phone tag with Kim till finally she caught up with me. She told me that I had won, 1 out of 4 prizes and they are: 1-lincoln navigator or i could take the cash of $45K, 2-$2500 cash, 3-3day 2nite trip to vegas, orlando and somewhere else, 4-flat screen tv but not the plasma tv. I then asked her how i won this and she said i could have entered a contest on the internet, or at the shopping mall- well i don’t remember ever entering anything and i still can’t figure out how she got my work number. She also told me the claim # and told me that they would be there on Wed, Thurs, Fri and Sat for me to pick the day and time and be prompt and she gave me the address of where i was suppose to go and claim my prize i would be given a scratch off ticket with my winning prize on it. Well i did my detective work this morning and found the owner of the ph # to be Kim Flores, 1903 79, Margate, FL 33069 and this is a residual ph #. i called the galleria this morning and they do not know what i am talking about. i also found this sight and thought that i would add my comments on this scam or whatever it is. i have to agree that this needs to be stopped this is thievery in so many ways if you don’t double check and see what you are fixing to get suckered into you or someone could lose everything and be out on the street and who would care then NO ONE!!!

I have received 2 phone calls this week. Both are from the Florida area. The first # is 954-733-7981 and the second is 954-957-7247. The first is disconnected and the second belongs to Kim Flores. I didn’t talk to anyone, just saw the numbers on my caller id. Sounds like nothing but a scam to me!
