Search

Given recent coverage of Google’s new Finance portal, I hadn’t noticed that they’ve also begun to integrate their core search product with Google Base.

For example, Googling “cars” produces an option to “refine your search,” as shown here:

Then, clicking “search vehicles” takes you directly to Base.

Similar things happen for searches on jobs and housing.

Obviously, Google is now competing with lots of companies. The Base integration described above is an assault on eBay and a number of vertical search firms; the Writely acquisition puts them closer to overlapping with Microsoft’s Office franchise; and, with Google Books, the company moves closer to Amazon.com.

The question is, can Google compete successfully in so many markets?

Not for long. :)

Sure Google can compete successfully in many markets. Why? Because we are entering a phase were Software as a Service (SaaS) will increasing ly chip away at one size fits all portals such as ebay. Amazon is no ebay its a quiet stealty SaaS entity.

Google is great, Google brought up the buzz of ajax, here is an ajax-based search engine http://www.askalexia.com, BETA, with web, image and video searches available
