The Magic Paint Brush

From the MIT Media Lab: the I/O Brush. The idea is relatively simple. Take a regular paint brush and then add a tiny video camera, a few LEDs, and a pressure sensor to trigger image capture. Combine this with a touch-screen, and you get a device that can “paint” color, texture, and movement.

The coolest application is the way movement is handled. The ladybug example shows that creativity can really expand the way this brush is used. I imagine this will become a favorite at tech centers around the country. Via A Venture Forth .

There is a professor at Oberlin who did this wirelessly last year. They could just paint in the air and the art would pop up on a projected image on a stage. I believe color choice was controlled by an on-screen palate ala Photoshop. Never saw it in person but it sounded impressive and the scale would be larger since you don’t need a touch screen. Very cool stuff.
