Speaking of privacy concerns, one of my favorite tools is BugMeNot. It gives you dummy account info when web sites ask you to complete registration forms. The Firefox extension is great.

I agree that the passwords occasionally don’t work. Still, the service is worthwhile if it saves me from registering on even a few sites.
Your second point is also valid–but I still find value in NYTimes, WashPost, etc.

BugMeNot is brilliant, but increasingly I find the passwords don’t work, especially on mainstream news sites. I find myself just not visiting those sites anymore - with so much information out there, why waste my time at the perimeter of a walled garden?
